AI Shopping in Germany: What's Live
Is ChatGPT checkout available in Germany? The dated status of AI shopping in DACH: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity — verified monthly.
As of August 20, 2026: no, you cannot complete a purchase inside ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot or Perplexity as a shopper in Germany. In-chat checkout is US-only on every platform. What is live in Germany today is the discovery layer — AI assistants recommending products and linking out to shops. This page is a dated status record of AI shopping in Germany and the DACH region; we re-verify every fact monthly against the platforms' own announcements.

The status at a glance
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Product discovery and recommendations: live in Germany since July 2025.
- In-chat checkout: not available in Germany. The US-only Instant Checkout was retired in March 2026; checkout now happens on the merchant's own site.
- Merchant access: application-only product feeds ("approved partners").
Google AI Mode / Gemini
- AI Mode in Search: live in Germany since October 7, 2025.
- In-chat purchases via the Universal Commerce Protocol: US shoppers only.
- Merchant access: Google Merchant Center feed — which German merchants can maintain today.
Microsoft Copilot
- Copilot answers with shopping content: live in German markets via Bing's index.
- Copilot Checkout: US rollout began January 8, 2026, on Copilot.com — no EU date announced.
- Merchant access: Shopify merchants were auto-enrolled (with an opt-out window); others apply.
Perplexity
- Product recommendations: live for German users.
- In-chat purchasing: US-focused; no announced DACH availability.
- Merchant access: a free merchant program feeds its product index.
The pattern across all four: discovery is open in DACH, transactions are not. The details, with sources and dates, follow.
ChatGPT Shopping in Germany: what works today
ChatGPT's shopping surface — product recommendations with images, prices, reviews and links to retailers — has been available to users in Germany since July 1, 2025, initially across electronics, home, fashion and beauty (onlinemarktplatz.de, 02.07.2025).
What ended: Instant Checkout, the buy-inside-the-chat feature, was retired in March 2026, roughly six months after launch. By February 2026 only about 30 Shopify merchants were actually live on it (Forrester analyst Emily Pfeiffer's count, reported in Forbes, 10.03.2026). OpenAI's current model is discovery inside ChatGPT with checkout on the merchant's own site.
What that means for a German shop: the game is being findable and recommendable, not being transactable. OpenAI's product feed onboarding is currently application-only — "available to approved partners", with a form at chatgpt.com/merchants; feeds are delivered as a daily file upload plus API updates (developers.openai.com/commerce, read 20.08.2026). Until an application is approved, ChatGPT builds its picture of your shop from what it can crawl — which is why crawler access and structured data are the levers that matter now. Our merchant guide to getting products into ChatGPT covers that path step by step.
Google AI Mode in Germany
Google's AI Mode — the conversational search surface that answers instead of listing links — has been live in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since October 7, 2025 (HORIZONT, 08.10.2025).
The transactional layer sits on top: at NRF on January 11, 2026, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard co-developed with Shopify and a coalition of retailers and payment networks, published under Apache 2.0 (NRF, January 2026). UCP is wired into AI Mode and the Gemini apps — but in-chat buying is live for US shoppers at participating retailers. For Germany: AI Mode recommends, users click out to shops.
The German merchant's lever exists today regardless: UCP transacts against Google Merchant Center data. A clean, complete Merchant Center feed is the preparation — it powers your Shopping visibility now and is the rail the transactional layer will run on.
Microsoft Copilot Checkout: Germany and EU status
Microsoft began rolling out Copilot Checkout on January 8, 2026 — in the US, on Copilot.com — with PayPal, Shopify and Stripe as activation partners. Shopify merchants were enrolled automatically after an opt-out window; non-Shopify merchants apply. Microsoft's stated expansion path is across its own ecosystem — "Bing, MSN, Edge, and more" — with no EU timing announced (Microsoft Advertising blog, 08.01.2026).
Relevant for DACH merchants either way: Copilot's organic shopping answers are fed by Bing's commerce index. Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow and product schema are things a German shop controls today, without waiting for any checkout rollout.
Perplexity: Germany and EU status
Perplexity operates a free merchant program: retailers share product data, which raises the chance of appearing as a recommended product in its shopping answers (per Perplexity's own program pages — note: perplexity.ai blocks automated fetching, so verify current terms in your browser). German users get shopping answers today; purchasing inside Perplexity remains US-focused, with no announced DACH date.
Why is in-chat checkout not live in the EU?
None of the four platforms has published an EU date — or an official reason. Three frictions are visible from the outside: the EU AI Act's main obligations apply from August 2, 2026 (see our practical AI Act guide); payment regulation differs materially from the US; and the liability question — who is responsible when an AI agent buys the wrong thing — has no settled EU answer yet. Treat any confident "EU launch date" you read as speculation until a platform announces one; this page will record it when one does.
What German merchants can do today
Everything above points at the same short list — the discovery layer is where DACH merchants can act now:
- Make your product data machine-readable. Product schema on every product page, consistent with your feed. Feed-page mismatches reduce visibility everywhere.
- Maintain the two feeds that already matter: Google Merchant Center (powers Shopping and the future UCP rail) and, if you sell into the US, a Copilot Checkout application.
- Let AI crawlers in. OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and friends need robots.txt access to build their picture of your shop.
- Apply where application is the only route: OpenAI's merchant form, Perplexity's merchant program.

How we track this: our weekly measurement
We do not compile this page from vendor press releases. AILoopwise runs its own weekly AI-visibility measurement: five answer-runs per tracked question per engine, across ChatGPT and Perplexity, logged with every cited source.
An honest example from the current data: for the question "How do I make my online shop visible to AI shopping agents?", our own brand appears in 0 of 10 runs in our latest measurement (August 20, 2026). What the engines cite instead: support.google.com, help.shopify.com, help.ads.microsoft.com, and a handful of agency sites. That substrate list is the practical value of measuring — it names the exact surfaces an answer is built from, which is where visibility work has to happen. We publish our readings as they are, including the unflattering ones.
